HOTELS along the Batu Fer-ringhi tourist belt in Penang are gearing up for the launch of the state-level ‘1Malaysia Clean, 1Malaysia Green’ Tourism Ministry campaign tomorrow.
With foreign and local tourists, visitors and members of the public expected to join in the gotong-royong and after-cleanup activities, excitement is building up for what promises to be a fun-filled day.
Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman, communications director of Golden Sands Resort where the launching ceremony will be held, said planning was on track for the half-day event.
He said this would be the first time the Royal Malaysian Police and Tourism Ministry would be involved in a beach cleanup along with tourists and the public.
“We’ve all been putting letters in the hotel rooms inviting guests to come join us,” Suleiman said. He said the cleanup, expected to involve 1,500 participants inclu-ding over 500 staff from participating hotels, would start at 8am.
“The cleanup, covering 1.3km of beach from Bayview to Rasa Sayang, will go on until 11am when we will then welcome Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.
“After the official launching ceremony, the fun begins with an array of beach activities lined up,” Suleiman said. Among the activities planned are sand castle competitions, tug-of-wars, beach soccer and volleyball, gasing (Malay spinning top) and food carving demonstrations as well as ketupat folding (packed rice dumpling) and cooking lessons.
“We’re looking forward to having a lot of tourists and visitors join us,” said Suleiman, adding that activities would go on until about 2pm.
The event is part of the ‘1Malaysia Clean, 1Malaysia Green’ nationwide campaign that is aimed at making tourism sites cleaner, greener and safer and establishing an environmentally-sound haven for tourists.

GEORGE TOWN: Japanese restaurants are known to serve their food fresh and natural. But Penang’s Isaribi Tei goes further. It’s green as well.
Since it opened in 2004, owner and director Yasuyuki Kayashima has made a point to ensure the restaurant co-exists harmoniously with nature and be among the most eco-friendly eateries in the country.
Its dishes utilise only natural ingredients, and nothing goes to waste. Leftovers are dumped in big pots, made into compost, and used to fertilise the sprawling organic garden in front of its premises.
Even the water used to wash the rice is later mixed with effective micro organisms (EM) solution and used as a cleaning agent. Wood cartons in which imported fish is delivered are used as signboards or indoor decoration.
“The compost makes great fertiliser, while the rice water-EM solution is effective in removing stains and dirt,” said the 57-year-old from Tokyo.
Kayashima, who holds an engineering degree and boasts an impressive CV with positions in various major pharmaceutical, food supply and industrial organisations, came to Malaysia eight years ago and decided to make it home.
“I have travelled to many parts of the world, but Penang is a lovely place to settle down,” he said, adding that he then decided to put his technical know-how and experience to good use.
“I finally realised my dream of owning my own restaurant. I have always had a passion for cooking, so here I am, running a restaurant with a difference.
“Our concept is simple – use good, fresh and tasty ingredients that are blessed with the taste of nature.”
He noted that many Malaysians have yet to embrace the go-green lifestyle, and as such, he wanted to be a role model, proving that one can indulge in the best that nature has to offer, and yet not contribute to its destruction.
At Isaribi – named after the light or fire that fishing boats in Japan use to lure fish at night – one can also find gorgeous antique furnishings, most of which Kayashima salvaged and restored to their original glory.
The restaurant is also famed for its selection of home-made ice creams, with flavours as exotic as black sesame and durian. Strangely for someone not native to Malaysia, the King of Fruits is something that Kayashima loves.
Isaribi Tei is located at No 60 & 62 Chow Thye Road in George Town, Penang. For more information, log on to www.isaribi.info or call 04-2298684.’

THE tiffin-carrier or tiered bowls known as mangkuk sia was once very popular. These ‘tiffins’ also known as ‘dabbas’ (the Indian word for snack), was originally introduced in India using stainless steel containers to store lunches.
The style soon caught up with the Malay and Chinese community. The idea of having food from the tiffin must have spurred the team at the Yayasan Keusahawanan Sosial (YKS) to start off this concept, hence naming the food delivery service MangkukTingkat.com.
According to MangkukTingkat.com managing director, Khairul Anuar Abdul Rahman, the company first introduced MangkukTingkat.com three years ago under the initiative of Yayasan Nur Hikmah, making it the first Malay food delivery service using the ‘tiffin’ approach.
Unfortunately, there were some hiccups and the management decided to streamline the MangkukTingkat.com program and introduce a new system to enhance the quality of the delivery service.

The MangkukTingkat.com meal pack is priced from RM10 onwards.
The new management replaced the tiffin carriers with plastic containers.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, we decided to use plastic containers instead of tiffins. This was due to the cost of operations. However, we retained the name MangkukTingkat since the name has already been established,” says Khairul.
According to Khairul, MangkukTingkat.com home delivery service is specifically designed for three groups of people. The busy singles, working couples and families who are on the go and do not have the time to cook.
“Our main aim is to help homemakers, single mothers and housewives or those who like cooking to earn some extra pocket money,’ says Khairul who trains those who take part in this program.
According to Khairul, the menus are planned by their in-house chef Hanidi. The menus change every month.
“You can place your order at our website, select your meal plan and make the necessary payment through our web cash system. By following these easy steps, you’ll get your meals delivered to your door step by our respective agents or business partners,” says the 42-year-old entrepreneur.
These business partners or food providers include housewives and single mothers who are appointed by MangkukTingkat.com to deliver food at their respective areas.
Currently, there are more than 20 business partners in the Klang Valley who service more than 500 households and offices.

Khairul:’You can place your order at our website, select your meal plan and make the necessary payment through our web cash system.’
“To become a business partner, one has to meet certain conditions required by the company. You must be able to cook well, own a computer, and have a team that can deliver orders to customers within a 10km radius.
“After selecting our business partners, we interview them as well as give them a brief training,” explains Khairul who hails from Bukit Mertajam.
Currently, the menu includes a set of three items, e.g. fish in soya sauce, fried lady’s finger, pineapple and rice; lemak cili api, vegetable soup, dates and white rice; rendang, vegetable soup, dates and rice; asam pedas, fried long beans, dates and rice and kurma, fried cabbage, dates and rice. Each set costs RM10.
The MangkukTingkat.com service is only available from Monday to Friday. No service on public holidays.
“The prices of the meals are different every month. Prices are set by the market price of raw materials. Several factors are taken into consideration before deciding on the pricing of meals. But be rest assured, the meal prices are reasonable,” he says.
He adds, “Reservations should be made at least three days before the next month. If you want to make a reservation in July, then your order should be made on or before June 28. Bookings made after the date will not be entered in the reservation list,” says Khairul. MangkukTingkat.com makes it a point to check on food providers to see if they comply with the guidelines set by the Health Ministry. Monitoring and spot checks are done from time to time to ensure that the food providers meet the guidelines.
This Ramadan, MangkukTingkat.com has drawn up an attractive package for the busy Muslims. The company will also be introducing a western food menu which will be known as the ‘Premium Pack.’ Some of the items on this menu includes lamb chops, beef steak, chicken chops and several types of spaghetti.
“The first 50 ‘early birds’ will get a 10% discount while those who order their meals for the first 3 months will get a 20% discount plus a set of western food for free,” says Khairul.
For more details and to make reservations, visit www.mangkuktingkat.com.
